Viney, 2nd-Lieu. Cecil Henry

Cecil Henry Viney was the son of Mr & Mrs C T Viney of Dartmouth, Durham Avenue, Bromley, who had been residents at South Hill Park for many years. His father was a Church warden at St Mark’s church, Bromley.

Cecil was educated at South Lodge, Enfield Chase & Winchester. When war broke out he was a student at R.A. School of Painting.

He was granted a commission in Aug 1914. Trained at Weymouth and attached to the 2nd Battalion Northamptonshire Regiment.

On the 9th May 1915 he was in charge of 31 bomb throwers. Only one survived but had no information about Viney. It is assumed he was killed and had been reported missing. He was 23 years old.

At a memorial service at Bromley Parish Church he name was one of those read out by the vicar of the fallen in the Bromley parish.

There was no formal list of the Fallen. On the whole lists were collected by Churches and Schools etc. The preliminary list was made from these records and printed on 3rd Feb, 1922 and people asked to check the names. The final list was printed after the unveiling of the Bromley War Memorial, upon which his name appears.
